The following story depicts a father who was wilfully engaged in acquiring a material item that revealed a heinous act of greed. Unfortunately, because of his greed, he passed it on to his daughter as a gift for her acceptance into a prestigious school.
Since the father failed to pay for the item and consciously chose not to report the sinister contents to the police, his greed led to a karmic consequence — a near-fatal one!
Zhou lived near a funeral parlor in Zibo, Shandong Province. One day, on his way home, he passed by the parlor and noticed a cell phone on the ground. It was a new and high-end brand phone. As it appeared to be a superior quality product, he decided to keep it.
A disturbing scene
He found three videos on this cell phone. The first two were selfies by a pretty young woman, a college student, and the owner herself, making faces in the camera. The third video was strange: It was filmed at night, and the images were shaking violently.
The cell phone appeared to drop to the ground with a “bang,” and then two faces appeared in the camera. One was the owner, and the other was a man. The man pushed the woman into a car.
Zhou thought about it and judged that the man was abducting the female. Her cell phone dropped to the ground and started filming automatically when this happened. Upon examining the film, Zhou noted that the scene in the video was not in the vicinity of the funeral parlor.
Somebody had picked up the cell phone from the ground and lost it again near the funeral parlor. From the images, Zhou surmised that this cell phone was first dropped and picked up near the city’s outskirts.
Since it was night, the images in the video were hard to see, and only the last three digits of the car’s number plate could be seen. Nevertheless, Zhou saw that the woman was unconscious and stuffed her into the car before it drove away.
Greed and a tainted gift
Upon returning home, Zhou’s daughter saw the cell phone and learned that her father had found it on the ground and brought it home. She was pleased and excitedly told Zhou that this cell phone cost more than RMB5,000 (US$725).
Zhou smiled and told her that this was his gift to her for being accepted by a prestigious university. Because of Zhou’s greed, the cell phone owner changed hands once again.
A month later, Zhou’s daughter attended a Karaoke bar to sing with her classmates before they parted to study in different schools. That evening, however, she did not come back home. Zhou went to the police station the next day to report his missing daughter.
They checked the monitors and found that the last time she showed up was at the entrance of Chengbei Road. She was walking along the road and finally disappeared into the darkness. It suddenly occurred to Zhou that this road led to the city’s outskirts.
He felt a cold shiver run down his spine. He recalled the video he viewed on the cell phone he had given his daughter. Hesitantly, he told the police officers about the video on his cell phone, in which a woman was abducted by a man one month ago.
The police checked their files and found a female student had been reported missing. With the clues provided by Zhou, the case was solved within three days.
Karmic retribution
Zhou’s suspicions were confirmed: His daughter had been abducted by the same man who molested the female cell phone owner. His daughter was seriously abused both physically and mentally within those several days. She reacted slowly and hardly recognized her father when she saw him.
She, however, was luckier than the previous victim. The young college student tried to escape after being raped, but was killed by the man.
To Zhou’s regret, the policemen informed him that if he had immediately reported to the police when he found the video on the phone showing a crime, and even if they could not solve the case immediately, Zhou’s daughter would not have become the next victim of the same criminal.
