General George S. Patton, one of the most notable senior officers in the U.S. Army during World War II, left an indelible mark on American and global military history. His battlefield accomplishments, successful military training, and combat strategies have been passed down through generations. Here we explore the life and legacy of General Patton, focusing on his discipline, leadership, and unwavering faith.

The discipline of a leader

Patton was a stickler for discipline, one of his key strategies for defeating the enemy. His commitment to discipline was evident in his hands-on leadership style. He often worked side-by-side with his soldiers, directing traffic, moving supplies, and even getting injured on the front lines. He cared for his soldiers, ensuring they were well-fed and well-rested, and publicly praised and rewarded their acts of bravery.

One of Patton’s most applauded accomplishments was transforming a disorganized unit into a sharp, disciplined force. When he took command of the Second Army in March 1942, he immediately imposed strict training on his officers and soldiers. His insistence on discipline extended to minor details, like wearing helmets and neckties, even for the nurses. His methods were effective, and within a week, the Second Army’s morale and discipline had improved significantly.

Inspiring the best in each soldier

Patton was a master of using his natural oratory skills to boost morale and communicate his tactical intent. Frequently delivering impromptu speeches, he explained the purpose of the war and his battle plans, praised the brave, and inspired the fearful. He aimed to inspire every soldier to become the best they could be. His speeches often stirred a sense of honor and pride in his soldiers, motivating them to fight bravely.

Before the Battle of Normandy, Patton told his officers: “Gentlemen, you’ve done an outstanding job, for which I thank you. I’m proud of you. But what you’ve done is only a performance in inactivity. From now on, I want action.” His words challenged his soldiers and instilled a sense of responsibility and courage.

Unwavering faith in God

Often overlooked is Patton’s unwavering faith, which was crucial to his military success. He believed in a power greater than himself, which he identified as God. This belief was evident during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, when Patton prayed for clear weather to enable air support for his Third Army. His prayer was answered, and his army relieved the trapped 101st Airborne Division in Bastogne, Belgium. This event, known as “Patton’s Prayer,” became a legendary miracle.
