Everyday activities often overlook the needs of people with disabilities, which led to Nicola Swann mugs becoming a symbol of inclusivity. Making them accessible for people with disabilities is more than just Nicola Swann’s hobby. It’s a story of kindness, creativity, and the search for dignity.

Find out more about why Nicola started this adventure, her mugs’ distinctive traits, and their touching responses.

An old friend asked Nicola Swann, a British potter who lives in Heckington, near Sleaford, to do something extraordinary. This friend’s spouse had problems using regular mugs because of a condition that affected his arms and hands. So she sought out Swann for help.

This is where Swann discovered a widespread issue — disabled individuals feeling uncomfortable using cups that resembled “sippy cups for kids.”

Due to compassion and a desire to help, Swann came up with an answer. She made the first version of her disability-friendly mugs for her friend's husband.

The birth of ‘Digni-TEA’ mugs

Due to compassion and a desire to help, Swann came up with an answer. She made the first version of her disability-friendly mugs for her friend’s husband.

It was a double-handled mug that provided stability and had a design that didn’t sacrifice style. That was the start of what is now called “Digni-TEA” mugs from her Made with Mud business.

Without fail, Swann was determined to make mugs that looked like everyday drinkware. She recognized that accessibility should not come at the cost of style.

So she made a few different styles for everyone to use. Others had two oversized handles for easy use, a hold pinch for stability, and an uneven design for people who couldn’t tilt their heads back.

Swann’s decision to call her products “Digni-TEA” or “Dignity” mugs is more than just a choice of name. Her goal is to give people back their dignity so they can drink from a regular mug without worrying about medical help.

“Give that person some dignity back by letting them drink from a mug instead of a sippy cup,” stated Swann.

Swann thoughtfully added features that made them even more versatile. Lowered handles made it possible to connect silicone lids, so people who liked to use straws could do so.

She also introduced cups with a weighted bottom for individuals with tremors, making them more stable and less prone to accidental spills.

Dignity Mugs go viral

Swann’s decision to share her creations on social media catapulted her into the spotlight. A collaboration with TikTok for Good turned her videos into a viral sensation, amassing millions of views.

Comments flooded in, expressing gratitude and admiration for Swann’s designs. Users appreciated the simplicity and functionality of the mugs, resonating with the idea of maintaining dignity in daily activities.

A comment on Instagram says: “As an occupational therapist, I love this! Dignity and normalcy are important to my patients. Great work!”

“I have terrible rheumatoid arthritis, and these seem so useful. The double handles are awesome,” another comment from Tiktok.

The overwhelming response wasn’t without its challenges. Swann was inundated with about 100 messages daily, a testament to her mug’s significant impact. People called them “game-changers,” expressing how they now felt comfortable drinking in social settings without the stigma of plastic cups.

Swann wisely collaborated with a company in the East Midlands to meet the soaring demand for mass production. This step ensured a steady supply and allowed her to focus on what mattered most — the creative process. Installment plans were introduced to make the adaptive mugs more accessible to a broader audience.
