At certain moments in life, people may experience feelings they cannot easily explain. Some dream of an unusual event, only to avoid a deadly accident the following day. Others feel a sudden urge to turn back and embrace a close friend, then receive tragic news soon afterward. Still others claim to have glimpsed ordinary scenes before they happened or sensed, before answering a ringing telephone, that the caller was bringing news of a loved one’s death.
Are these experiences merely coincidences, or could they point to forms of perception that are not yet fully understood?
A nightmare that helped a family escape disaster
One woman recalled an incident that occurred many years ago, when relatives from several states gathered to celebrate her younger sister’s graduation. The extended family stayed together in a small cabin in the mountains.
Two nights before they were scheduled to return home, her 10-year-old cousin had an unusually vivid nightmare. Although the girl rarely had bad dreams, she dreamed that the entire cabin was engulfed in flames. At the time, however, no one believed the dream might be connected to a real danger.
The following evening was supposed to be the family’s final night at the cabin. Their grandmother began worrying that they might miss their flight the next day, prompting a lengthy family discussion. The nearby airport was small, and there seemed to be little risk of arriving too late, but the family continued debating whether they ought to leave early.
Eventually, one of the younger cousins joined the discussion, and the family decided to depart the cabin at 9 p.m. and spend the night in the city instead.
At approximately 1 a.m., lightning struck the propane tank outside the cabin, causing a massive explosion. The building was quickly engulfed in flames.
Because the local fire department consisted entirely of volunteers, the fire continued burning for several hours. It was not fully extinguished until around 8 a.m. — the same time the family had originally planned to check out and leave.

Had they remained at the cabin overnight as planned, they might not have survived.
A moment’s hesitation became a lifelong regret
Another person shared an experience from when he was 13. It was the final day of the school term, and also the last day he and his best friend would attend the same school. Because they would be going to different schools afterward, the boys walked home slowly, wanting to make the most of their remaining time together.
When they reached his friend’s house, they said goodbye. His friend explained that he would be spending the following week at his father’s home, and the two agreed to meet again after he returned.
As his friend stepped inside, the boy was suddenly overcome by a powerful urge to turn back and give him a hug. The feeling seemed strange because hugging was not something they normally did.
He stopped, turned around, and took several steps back toward the house. Then he decided he was probably overthinking the situation. After all, they would see each other again in only a week.
Still, the troubling feeling did not go away.
The following day, he saw a local news report about a serious crash on the road his friend would have traveled to reach his father’s house. At first, he tried to convince himself that it was merely a coincidence.
The next day, updated reports revealed that several people had died in the crash. The victims were his friend, his friend’s father, and his friend’s older brother.
Many years later, he still remembers the moment when he stopped and considered turning back, but chose not to embrace his friend. He described it as one of the greatest regrets of his life.
Ordinary scenes that unfolded exactly as envisioned
A man named Wei Fu said he had experienced numerous unexplained premonitions over the years. Some appeared in dreams, while others came to him when he was fully awake.
Most of the scenes he envisioned were surprisingly ordinary.
On one occasion, he suddenly saw a clear mental image of a middle-aged man and woman he had never met entering his office. The woman was tall and slender with blond hair. She carried a chocolate pie for his employer and complained that the office doorbell was too loud.

Several weeks later, the same scene unfolded in real life.
The couple entered the office and turned out to be friends of his employer. They had brought a chocolate pie as a gesture of thanks. From the moment they walked through the door to the moment Wei Fu accepted the pie and placed it in the refrigerator, every detail seemed to match what he had previously envisioned.
Other experiences were more troubling.
On one occasion, he met with a client who lived in another city. As they parted, the client smiled and said: “See you in the spring.”
At that moment, a clear thought entered Wei Fu’s mind: They would never see each other again.
Several weeks later, the client was diagnosed with cancer and died not long afterward.
Another incident occurred on a Saturday morning after Thanksgiving. When the telephone rang, Wei Fu felt certain — even before answering — that someone was calling to tell him a friend had died.
He later learned that his friend had been killed the previous night in a crash involving drunk driving.
Can dreams warn people of approaching danger? Are powerful intuitions simply coincidences, or could they reflect a kind of perception that remains poorly understood?
There is no definitive explanation for such experiences. Whatever their origin, these stories leave behind more than curiosity about the unknown. They also remind us that time with family and friends can end unexpectedly and that moments of affection or gratitude are not always best postponed.
