Affiliated with a reputable enterprise that specializes in cosmetic items and toiletries is the spectacular Rosa Hill rose garden in Gukeng Township in Southern Taiwan’s Yunlin County.
Rosa Hill rose garden
Covering an area of approximately 198 hectares (4.9 acres), Rosa Hill (蘿莎玫瑰山莊) is composed of a large European-style outdoor rose garden, a spacious conservatory, a tropical garden, and a large parking lot that can accommodate tour buses and passenger cars.
Established in 2014, Rosa Hill has already planted over 500 varieties of rose bushes. There are over 3,000 roses and other fragrant plants in its outdoor and indoor gardens, and it’s free to visit this amazing garden. Therefore, it was a must-see destination for those who visited Yunlin County before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upon arriving at Rosa Hill, what first greets visitors is a striking pink building with a triangular roof, which is the information center.
Another scene that immediately attracts visitors’ attention is a huge 3D painting on a wall of a building near the European-style Rosa Hill rose garden. The virtual landscape on the wall painting seems to merge with the nearby landscape.
With the colorful images of a lifelike peacock, a virtual fountain, as well as a virtual hallway decorated with two floral arches, roses, and birds, this intricate wall painting is a great spot for photography.
A European-style rose garden
One of the most impressive features of the Rosa Hill rose garden is its chessboard lawn garden. In addition to a variety of rose bushes, there are many other beautiful flowers and plants, including trumpet vines (Allamanda cathartica) and Taiwan scouring rush (Equisetum hyemale), which are scattered throughout the garden.
There are also some beautiful art installations, such as a pumpkin carriage, a Greek-style cylindrical pavilion, a retro phone booth, heart-shaped flower beds, a floral arch passage, and a unique rock formation representing the now underwater landscape before the construction of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River (長江壩底石).
Tropical garden
The tropical garden is a cute garden strewn with hundreds of tropical plants arranged in the form of a labyrinth. Among them are the spectacular flowers of hanging lobster claws (Heliconia Rostrata Ruiz et Pav, or false bird of paradise), and yellow heliconia (Heliconia subulata). Upon entering the tropical garden, one’s attention will be immediately attracted to the spectacular display of exotic flowers.
Additionally, there are art installations of squirrels, cranes, tigers, and zebras lurking in the tropical foliage. They make this tropical garden even more interesting, especially for children. It is fun for both adults and children to wander among so many unique exotic plants and flowers.
Floating garden
In 2020, Rosa Hill came up with the idea of furnishing its spacious greenhouse with a variety of artificial flowers and plants hanging from above to create a relaxing ambiance. This “floating garden” has become one of the most popular attractions at Rosa Hill.
Floating gardens actually originated in Bangladesh, with many established under the sponsorship of the Bangladesh government. Moreover, many non-governmental organizations are involved in this endeavor to help fight poverty and food scarcity in the country.
Rose shop
Besides appreciating the beautiful roses and watching the rose oil extraction equipment in action, visitors can also purchase various signature rose essential oils, rose-scented shampoo, and other fragrance products at the Rose shop. There is also a hand-washing station where visitors can try out handmade rose soaps and gel.
Though roses mainly blossom in spring in Taiwan, Rosa Hill is an attraction where visitors can see beautiful roses all year round. However, those who want to explore this spectacular rose garden have to wait until the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in the region are lifted.
