Hello Kitty, the beloved character with her iconic bow,  has captured people’s hearts worldwide. With her adorable charm, she has become a unique symbol of cuteness and innocence. But there’s more than meets the eye with this “kawaii” character. Beyond her adorable persona lies a depth that shows why she is not just a cultural icon, but also an inspiration to so many people worldwide.

Who is Hello Kitty?

Hello Kitty (ハローキティ, Harō Kitī), also known as Kitty White (キティ・ホワイト, Kitī Howaito), is a fictional character produced by the Japanese company Sanrio, created by Yuko Shimizu and designed by Yuko Yamaguchi.

The idea of “kawaii,” which honors all things adorable and charming, is at the heart of the brand. Shimizu’s artistic vision effectively encapsulated this style, creating a mascot that personifies the innate sweetness and innocence that defines “kawaii.”

She is depicted as a female white Japanese Bobtail cat with a red bow on her left ear who frequently wears blue overalls with a yellow top. The character initially appeared on a product, a vinyl coin purse, in Japan in 1974.

Hello Kitty’s mysterious mouthless design

One of her most interesting features is the absence of a mouth. At first look, it may appear peculiar, but this distinguishing characteristic adds to her unique appearance. Because she has no mouth, people can project their emotions and sentiments onto her, making her a medium for empathy and personal interpretation.

People can gain comfort and express themselves through Hello Kitty’s lack of a defined mouth. Her blank canvas reflects the feelings and thoughts of people who admire her. In a world where communication can be difficult, her mouthlessness creates a space for people to connect and share their stories.

Early days

2008 Hello Kitty was named the ambassador of Japanese tourism in China and Hong Kong, making her the first fictional character to hold such an important role. This underscored her extraordinary popularity among children and young women in those areas.

While her popularity in Japan declined before 2000, she is still regarded as a global symbol. In a Character Databank popularity list, she lost her position as the top-grossing character in Japan in 2002, falling to third place in a 2010 survey behind Anpanman and Pikachu from Pokémon. Nonetheless, her captivating appeal and cultural significance continue to captivate people of all ages.

A huge global sucess

To celebrate Sanrio’s 50th anniversary, the partnership with Girl Skateboards released skateboards featuring her graphics. As a result, Hello Kitty stores expanded worldwide, with an African store opening in 2013.

She has also made an impression on the culinary world. The Hello Kitty Sweets-themed restaurant is located in Taipei, Taiwan, and serves dishes inspired by the iconic figure while surrounded by Hello Kitty-themed decor.

Her popularity extends to Japanese theme parks as well. She is featured as part of the Sanrio-themed attractions at Harmonyland and Sanrio Puroland, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world she represents.
