Some of the beauties of the world are popularly recognized, and some aren’t — these are hidden beauties. In particular, the magnificent ginkgo trees in large parts of China are majestic.

Most are situated on the east side of the Hu Huanyong line in China, which has a humid climate. The Chinese respect and admire the ginkgo tree. Many groves are located near temples and monasteries where these trees are safeguarded and preserved.

Why is the ginkgo tree special?

Referred to as “a living fossil,” the ginkgo tree, or Ginkgo biloba, is one of the oldest species of trees that still survives. Its origins can be traced back to 270 million years ago. The ginkgo tree was once spread across the globe — but as generations passed, it became extinct in the wild.

However, most of the ginkgo trees in China have been preserved to this day — thanks to the ancient monks. Another factor is the tree’s durability; the ability to regenerate and endure natural disasters and even man-made destruction is remarkable. The ginkgo tree survived the atomic bomb dropped on Japan during WW2, while only a handful survived.

Symbol of the ginkgo

Among the Asian civilization, the ginkgo tree has had a significant influence and cultural factor. Most notably in China, Buddhism, and Confucianism are correlated with the ginkgo. The ginkgo leaf symbolizes tranquility, enlightenment, longevity, and harmony. Being situated near temples, shrines, and monasteries brings out more of the allure of these elegant trees.

The beauty of these trees can bring peace and tranquility to your mind and heart — as the tree’s harmony and longevity inspires you.
