In a world where we often take the smallest denominations of currency for granted, a young man from Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, turned a 10-yuan note into his lifeline. This is the story of Xiao Jia, whose quick thinking and resilience led to a dramatic escape from illegal captivity.
The lure of a new friendship
Xiao Jia’s ordeal began innocently enough with the promise of a new friendship. In early June 2015, he met a woman named Lei online. They kept in touch through QQ, a popular messaging app in China. Lei claimed to be a businesswoman in Quzhou and frequently expressed her desire to meet Xiao Jia in person.
The tap is set
The young and unsuspecting Xiao Jia was thrilled when Lei invited him to meet during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. On June 20, 2015, he arrived at the Jiangshan train station, where Lei and her “cousin” greeted him warmly. The friendly atmosphere quickly turned into a nightmare when, upon arriving at Lei’s residence, the “cousin” locked the door outside, and two young men appeared, forcefully taking control of Xiao Jia and confiscating his belongings, demanding his bank card PIN.
Xiao Jia’s harrowing captivity
For days, Xiao Jia was closely watched. His every move, including eating, sleeping, and bathing, was monitored. His communication was heavily restricted, and any attempt to signal his distress during phone calls was met with immediate threats and violence.
A spark of hope
Despite the dire circumstances, Xiao Jia never gave up on finding an opportunity to escape. In early July, he devised a plan to use money as a messenger. He wrote a plea for help on a 5-yuan note and tossed it out the window, but luck was not on his side, and the message went unnoticed.
A desperate negotiation and a clever rescue
On the morning of July 15, Xiao Jia feigned a negotiation with his captors, allowing him to flick a carefully prepared 10-yuan note out of a window gap. The letter, detailing his plight and approximate location, was eventually found, and the finder alerted the police. Thanks to Xiao Jia’s ingenuity, the police were able to locate and rescue him.
Justice served
By July 16, Lei and her accomplices were criminally detained for illegal imprisonment. Xiao Jia’s story is a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of being vigilant when meeting Internet acquaintances.
