As the founder of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, also known as Ming Taizu, was determined to build a strong, powerful, and morally upright empire. One of his primary strategies involved strict governance and a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and lawbreaking, even among his family members. This commitment to justice and integrity profoundly affected the dynasty and set a lasting example for future generations.

The consequences of breaking the law in the time of Zhu Yuanzhang

Ming Taizu’s efforts to strengthen the Ming Dynasty’s military might were innovative and included using regional tea in exchange for horses, a vital resource for border defense.

However, his son-in-law, Ouyang Lun, saw an opportunity for personal gain in this strategy and engaged in smuggling tea, leveraging his position for illicit profit.

Despite his high status, Zhu Yuanzhang’s response was swift and unequivocal. Upon learning of Ouyang Lun’s actions, he ordered his execution, sending a clear message that no one was above the law.

A stark warning: The philosophy of ‘Guarding the Well’

Zhu Yuanzhang’s approach to governance was not limited to punitive measures. He also sought to inspire and educate his officials about the importance of integrity through the metaphor of “Guarding the Well.”

By likening an official’s salary to well water that should suffice to support a family, he emphasized the dangers of greed and the consequences of seeking wealth beyond one’s means.

This philosophy profoundly influenced many officials, fostering a culture of honesty and responsibility that became renowned in Chinese history.

Living by example: The story of Xu Du

Among the stories illustrating the effectiveness of Zhu’s teachings, the tale of Xu Du, the Governor of Changzhou, stands out. Despite his love for Taihu whitefish, Xu refused to accept them as a bribe, choosing instead to learn to fish and live within his means.

This story, highlighted by Zhu Yuanzhang’s investigation and subsequent reward for Xu’s integrity, encapsulates the values Zhu sought to instill within his administration.

Through measures that ranged from personal accountability to fostering a culture of integrity, Zhu set a high standard for governance that resonates through the ages.
