In the early morning of June 26, 2010, a thief in Gansu, China, snuck into a house near the wholesale vegetable market. It happened that an old woman was alone in the house and suffered a heart attack when he was looking for valuable property in the room. The situation was critical, and eventually, the thief helped the old woman take water and medicine before he left without taking anything.
A medical emergency
On the night of June 25, although excited shouts by sports fans could still be heard from the nearby bar in the Zhang Su Tan vegetable wholesale market, Zhang went to sleep early because she was old and had heart disease. The next morning at 4:00 a.m., Zhang felt respiratory distress, and her chest heaved violently.
She tried to turn it over a few times without success. She wanted to scream, but did not have even a little bit of strength. She fumbled to turn on the bedside table lamp and reached out to take a cup of water and heart medication placed on her bedside. Her hand touched the cup, but accidentally pushed it off the table, accompanied by a crisp sound of the broken cup shattering on the floor.
An intruder
The old woman was horrified that a dark shadow appeared in the room opposite the door after the sound. A young man was haphazardly standing in Zhang’s clothes piled on the floor.
The black shadow stood and slowly walked toward the old woman. Zhang’s heart was in her throat, but she held back her fear and begged the man to hand her the medicine at her bedside. The man in the dark hesitated for a while, then took a cup of water and medicine according to the old woman’s request and helped the woman take the medicine with some water.
After taking the medicine, the old woman gasped violently and returned to her senses. She asked the man why he was in her house. The man hesitated for a long while before telling Zhang he was a thief and entered the room from the window. When he entered the room, the old woman was sleeping soundly; she knocked over the cup and alarmed him. He saw that the old woman’s condition was critical and helped her to take the medicine. He left the house quickly, ignoring Zhang’s request to repay him.
Saved by a thief
After receiving the news that the old woman was seriously ill, Zhang’s son rushed home. He usually delivered vegetables to the market by truck, and his wife owned a small vegetable stall. The son came home after listening to his mother’s encounter. After an examination, they did not find anything missing. To better care for Zhang, her son took her to Lanzhou to live with him and his wife.
Being saved by the thief, Zhang was grateful to him, and her son looked forward to the day when he could thank the thief in person.
