An unexpected mystery in the quiet town of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, captivated the community’s attention, sparking daily discussions on the local WhatsApp group. Strange Nestle Blue Riband brand chocolate bar wrappers suddenly appeared all over Dudley Crescent. Dubbed “Wafergate,” this case intrigued the residents and revealed the unexpected antics of the town’s furry inhabitants.

The chocolate bar wrappers mystery

In the Dudley Crescent neighborhood, September marked the beginning of “Wafergate” when observant locals started noticing Blue Riband wrappers strewn across the estate. The daily discussions on the estate’s WhatsApp group quickly became a forum for speculations and theories as residents pondered the origin of the mysterious chocolate wrappers.

A 33-year-old mother from the area, Fiona Downes, stated: “I first noticed all these wrappers in September. We live on a private estate on an ex-RAF base — it’s a very close-knit community.

“I was strolling with my kids, and I noticed there were Blue Riband wrappers all over the place. I shared a photo on our WhatsApp group requesting that anyone eating chocolate bars pick up their wrappers.

“But nobody came clean, and in the following months, more wrappers and partially consumed chocolate bars kept turning up,” Fiona added.

Greedy squirrels revealed

People in the neighborhood were shocked when the real criminals were found out. The mystery was solved on November 21 when a neighbor saw the skip on a site behind the estate containing a box of Blue Ribands. A connection was made when Natalie Clarke, another resident, captured photos of squirrels running up trees with chocolate in their mouths.

The “aha moment” dawned on the community as they realized that greedy squirrels were the culprits behind the “Wafergate” saga.

The squirrel’s love for Blue Riband bars

Squirrels, with their bushy tails and acrobatic maneuvers, are remarkable creatures. They are natural omnivores with a diverse diet, including nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, buds, and even green vegetables. These animals are resourceful because they can change their food to meat from eggs, insects, young birds, small rodents, amphibians, and snakes.

To prepare for the winter months, squirrels hoard and store things away, called caching. For some species, burying food in piles near their sleeping places is a way to stay alive. These intelligent animals often scatter food up to seven acres from their homes.

Hoarding habits of squirrels

Squirrels’ hoarding habits are nothing short of extraordinary. They meticulously organize their hoarded food by size, type, and nutritional value. When winter comes, squirrels rely on their heightened sense of smell and expanded memory to locate their buried foods, even under layers of snow.

This hoarding behavior contributes significantly to the ecosystem by aiding seed dispersal. Forgotten caches may sprout into new plants, playing a crucial role in supporting the spread of seeds within the environment.

As if their hoarding habits weren’t intriguing enough, squirrels exhibit naughty behavior, such as stealing food from each other. Studies suggest that approximately 20 to 30 percent of squirrels engage in some form of theft. If a squirrel wants to keep its food safe from thieves, it might even pretend to bury it. This way, the food stays close by while the thief is confused.
