In the heart of Henan Province, China, nestled within the Funiu Mountain Range, lies a tale of resilience, dedication, and love that transcends the ordinary. This is the story of Du Guangyun, a rural teacher from Nanzhao County, and his wife, Li Zhengjie, whose unwavering spirit has become a beacon of hope and inspiration.

The birth of a dream

Before September 1981, the children of Dagou Village had two choices: travel beyond the mountains for education or forego schooling altogether. That year marked a turning point when the village established its first school, and 19-year-old Du Guangyun, fresh out of high school, became its first teacher. The establishment of the school in such a remote location represented hope for over 500 households scattered across the rugged terrain.

A turn for the worse

Disaster struck in the summer of 1990. A torrential downpour and resulting flood collapsed the school’s mud-brick classrooms. Eager to rebuild, Du Guangyun threw himself into the work, braving the rain to transport bricks and stones. However, his dedication came at a significant cost. Overwhelmed by exhaustion and the deluge, Du Guangyun fell ill with a severe infection, leaving him paralyzed on his left side. The dream of teaching seemed to slip away.

A testament to love and perseverance

Refusing to let her husband’s spirit falter, Li Zhengjie, a woman who had never learned to read or write, made a vow that would define the next 16 years of their lives. She would carry her husband to school daily, navigating the treacherous three-kilometer journey from home to the school across uneven paths, rivers, and over stones.

Their journey was not without peril. One summer, after a heavy rain, Li Zhengjie slipped while crossing the swollen river, causing both to be swept away. Miraculously, they survived, saved by the branches that caught them downstream. This incident, however, did not deter them; it only strengthened their resolve.

A sacrifice recognized

Du Guangyun, moved by his wife’s sacrifices, once attempted to push her away, believing she deserved a life free from hardship. However, the local civil affairs office met his efforts to provoke a divorce with understanding and humor, and the couple remained together, their bond more vital than ever.

Du Guangyun’s legacy of education

Despite the challenges, Du Guangyun never missed a day of teaching. With Li Zhengjie’s support, he continued to educate the children of Dagou Village, never once letting his physical condition hinder his duty. By the end of 2006, the school had new classrooms, and Du Guangyun no longer needed to be carried to work, a testament to the couple’s enduring effort.

Under Du Guangyun’s tutelage and Li Zhengjie’s unwavering support, the village achieved a 100 percent enrollment and graduation rate, with 15 students attending university — a remarkable achievement for such a remote community.

A beacon of hope

The story of Du Guangyun and Li Zhengjie is more than a tale of personal triumph; it is a narrative that underscores the power of human resilience, the importance of education, and the unbreakable bonds of love. It serves as a reminder that despite overwhelming odds, determination, and support can pave the way for extraordinary achievements.

Their legacy is a beacon of hope, not just for the children of Dagou Village, but for anyone who believes in the transformative power of education and the indomitable spirit of love.
