In the world of sports, age can seem like an insurmountable barrier. However, for Mike Fisher, a 90-year-old soccer enthusiast from Bloxwich, West Midlands, age is merely a number. Known affectionately as “Ninja” by his teammates, Fisher continues to dazzle on the pitch, scoring hat-tricks regularly and defying the typical bounds of athletic age.
A living legend
While Mike Fisher may not be a household name in the broader soccer community, he is nothing short of a legend in his local area. A former RAF veteran, Fisher plays for two local walking soccer teams, turning out for games every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday — a routine he started at the ripe young age of 82. His soccer journey began in 1949, and he’s shown no signs of slowing down.
Mike’s nimbleness on the field earned him the nickname “Ninja.” “One minute, you think you’ve caught me, and the next, I’ve scored,” he explains to The Sun with a chuckle. This agility and quickness make him a formidable opponent, even among players decades his junior.
From youngster to nonagenarian
Born in Bedfordshire, Fisher began his soccer journey at 14, playing in the local Luton and District League before moving to the Midlands, spurred by love. He met his future wife Doris in Blackpool during his RAF days. The couple married and settled in the Black Country after his tours in Libya, Egypt, and Iraq in 1954. Though Doris passed away four years ago, Fisher’s passion for soccer continues, driven by a lifelong love for the game.
A return to passion
After a hiatus that lasted until his early 80s, Fisher rediscovered his passion for soccer, quickly becoming a fixture at Old Corinthians. This team plays at the non-league Rushall Olympic’s ground in Walsall. Celebrating his 90th birthday recently, he marked the occasion by scoring five goals in a single match against players 40 years his junior, a testament to his enduring skill and vitality.
Beyond the soccer field
However, Fisher’s contributions extend beyond just playing. He is deeply involved in his community, organizing charity matches and events to support various causes. His efforts demonstrate a commitment to using his platform for good, bringing people together for more than just sports.
Fisher also invests time in coaching and mentoring young soccer players at local schools. Under his guidance, young athletes learn the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience, shaping them into better players and individuals.
Inspiring generations
As Britain’s oldest soccer player, Mike Fisher represents more than just athletic endurance; he embodies a spirit of undying passion and commitment. His story resonates well beyond his local community, inspiring anyone who hears about his remarkable journey.
Mike’s legacy is evident as he continues to play with zeal: “That feeling of scoring goals never gets old — even if I am,” he says with a chuckle. Looking ahead, he is determined to keep playing: “I still love football and I’ll keep going for as long as I can — or at least while I’m still scoring on a regular basis,” (The Sun).
Fisher’s story powerfully reminds us of the joy and fulfillment that come from following one’s passion, regardless of age. It challenges us to reconsider what is possible as we age and encourages us to pursue our passions with heart and vigor.
