Historical significance
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival (端午節), is held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. It is one of the most important festivals in Taiwan. The festival has deep historical roots dating back over 2,000 years. It commemorates the life and death of the patriotic poet and statesman Qu Yuan, the beloved prime minister of the southern Chinese state of Chu during the Warring States Period (600 B.C. to 200 B.C.).
Legend states that Qu Yuan drowned in the Miluo River (汨羅江) to protest government corruption. To save him, or at least recover his body, locals raced out in boats, banging drums and throwing rice into the water to ward off evil spirits and fish. This practice evolved into today’s dragon boat races.
In September 2009, UNESCO officially included the Dragon Boat Festival in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making it the first Chinese holiday to receive this recognition.
Tainan’s unique celebration
Tainan, Taiwan’s oldest city, offers a unique backdrop for the Tainan City International Dragon Boat Championships, blending traditional Chinese culture and local Taiwanese flavor. As this year marks the 400th anniversary of Tainan’s founding, organizing an international dragon boat race holds special significance for cultural heritage.
The city’s waterways, notably the Tainan Canal, become a central festival activity hub. Spectators lined the banks to witness the thrilling dragon boat races, where teams of rowers, drummers, and steersmen worked in unison to propel their ornately decorated boats toward the finish line. The rhythmic pounding of the drums, the splash of paddles, and the crowd cheers created an electrifying atmosphere.

Traditional food stalls also offered delicacies such as zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), which are synonymous with the festival. These triangular parcels of glutinous rice, stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves, are a tribute to Qu Yuan and are believed to keep evil spirits at bay.
Additionally, the festival hosted exciting arts and cultural performances, showcasing traditional music, dance, and martial arts, including experiential activity zones with standing egg games and various children’s activities.
