Harris and his girlfriend, Helen, had only known each other for six months, but their love blossomed quickly. Before long, they were planning to spend their lives together. However, fate had other plans. During a routine medical exam before the wedding, Harris was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. The doctor regretfully informed them that he had only a month left to live.
The news was devastating. Harris nearly fainted, and Helen broke down in tears. Unable to cope with the situation, Helen made the heartbreaking decision to leave him.
Harris, believing his days were numbered, lost all hope and simply waited for the end. But a month passed, then two, then three — and he was still alive and feeling fine. Confused, he returned to the hospital for another check-up. To his shock, the new results showed he was perfectly healthy — the original diagnosis had been a mistake.
What should have been good news filled Harris with anger instead. Because of that misdiagnosis, he had lost Helen forever. By then, she had moved on and found someone new, leaving him to regret what could have been.
Another engagement, another disaster
Sometime later, at a social gathering, Harris met Daisy, a beautiful woman who instantly captured his heart. The two quickly fell in love and soon got engaged. But just as before, disaster struck.
As part of his company’s routine health check-up, Harris was diagnosed with HIV. On top of that, he lost his job because of it. Convinced it was another mistake, he rushed to a hospital for a second opinion. This time, however, the diagnosis was confirmed — he had indeed contracted the disease.
Harris was in complete disbelief. He had always been careful and responsible, so how could this have happened? The news shattered him. Daisy, unable to bear the burden, called off their engagement.
Within a short span of time, Harris had suffered three devastating blows: a terminal illness, unemployment, and heartbreak. Unable to cope, he drowned his sorrows in alcohol. One night, drunk and stumbling near a riverbank, he lost his footing and fell into the water. But fate had not abandoned him just yet.

A cryptic prophecy
Harris was rescued by Old Jenny, a local Romani healer known for her crystal ball readings. Though skeptical of such things, Harris was desperate. He begged her to help him.
After gazing into her crystal ball, Old Jenny calmly told him: “You are perfectly healthy. There is no disease in your body.”
Harris was incredulous. “That’s impossible! I’ve been tested multiple times!”
But Jenny was sure. She urged him to get tested again. Desperate for answers, Harris agreed — and to his astonishment, the results confirmed that he was completely disease-free. Furious at the previous misdiagnosis, he sued the hospital and won a substantial settlement.
Despite his legal victory, something continued to trouble him. Why did he always fall ill right before marriage? Seeking answers, he returned to Old Jenny, who delivered a shocking revelation.
“You once made a vow,” she told him, “but you never fulfilled it. That is why, whenever you try to get married, fate punishes you with an incurable illness. If you keep ignoring your promise, you will spend your life alone.”
Harris was stunned. “What vow?” he asked.
Jenny shook her head. “Only you would know. But if you don’t keep it, you will never escape this curse.”
Harris racked his brain, but he couldn’t recall making any such promise.
A forgotten promise resurfaces
Life moved on, and Harris found work at a gas station. There, he met Lina, a kind and cheerful woman who took an interest in him. Harris liked her too, but the fear of his mysterious curse kept him from pursuing a relationship.
One evening, Lina invited him to celebrate her birthday. Over drinks, she asked why he kept avoiding her when she had made her feelings clear. Harris didn’t know how to explain, afraid she wouldn’t believe him. His silence hurt Lina, and she left in tears.
Days passed, and Lina stopped showing up to work. Concerned, Harris asked around and learned that after leaving the party, she had gotten into a car accident and was in critical condition.
Guilt consumed him. Had he caused this? If he hadn’t rejected her, would she have driven home safely? Standing by her hospital bed, he whispered: “Lina, please don’t give up. If you wake up, I promise — I’ll marry you.”

As if responding to his words, Lina slowly opened her eyes. Miraculously, she recovered, and true to his word, Harris married her.
The past comes full circle
Even after their wedding, Harris remained uneasy. Would his strange afflictions return? But after multiple hospital check-ups, he remained in perfect health. Perhaps, he thought, Old Jenny had been wrong.
One day, while sorting through Lina’s old belongings, Harris stumbled upon a childhood photo. His heart nearly stopped when he saw himself in the picture.
Lina explained: “That’s me and my childhood friend, Nori. We were inseparable, but we lost contact after he moved away.”
Harris was speechless. “Lina… my name used to be Nori. I changed it when I turned eighteen.”
They stared at each other in disbelief. Memories came rushing back — climbing church walls, playing in the fields. And then, Lina laughed.
“Do you remember the vow you made in that church?” she asked. “You said you’d marry me when we grew up. And if you broke that promise, you’d fall sick.”
At that moment, everything clicked. The strange illnesses, the tragic separations — they were all tied to a childhood promise he had unknowingly neglected. And now that he had fulfilled it, the curse had finally lifted.
Though the journey was difficult, fate guided Harris back to the love he was meant to have.
