Disasters can wreak havoc in the blink of an eye, causing immense losses and leaving people with no escape, sometimes even claiming lives. Wildfires are among the most devastating of these catastrophes.
On January 7, 2025, a thick plume of black smoke rose southeast of Palisades Drive on California’s Pacific Coast Highway. This smoke quickly spread across the skies of Malibu, a wealthy coastal city. Towering flames engulfed homes and vehicles in their path, with the fire intensifying and spiraling out of control.
A vigilant community member
Edgar McGregor, a young man from Pasadena, a suburb northeast of Los Angeles, is passionate about community and environmental issues. He noticed the arid climate and was alert to the imminent threat of an unusual forest fire. Edgar closely monitored the situation and used Facebook to send warnings, urging residents to stay vigilant.
On the evening of January 7, the day the 2025 Southern California wildfire began, Edgar live-streamed from local streets using his phone. He captured the sky over the local mountains, filled with a fiery red glow and thick smoke. In his broadcast, he urgently called on residents to gather important documents and evacuate immediately. He went door-to-door, warning those still at home to leave quickly.

A miraculous escape
Later, his community was indeed consumed by the fire. However, a miracle occurred: his house emerged unscathed, completely intact! This stroke of luck also happened to Hollywood star James Woods. Initially studying dentistry, Woods turned to the silver screen. His mansion was in Palisades, where the Southern California wildfires first erupted. When Woods saw flames near his swimming pool, he quickly drove away.
During his evacuation, he suddenly remembered his 94-year-old neighbor with dementia might still be at home. He contacted the neighbor’s son, who confirmed his father was there. Woods immediately turned back to rescue him. Despite the raging fire, through some twists and turns and with the help of another resident, the elderly neighbor was safely evacuated.
Woods had recently renovated his home, and the sudden fire brought him to tears in a video. Two days later, when he returned to his fire-ravaged neighborhood, he was astonished to find his house completely intact, despite not having installed any fire-resistant materials.
