When love is tested by crisis, the strongest bonds shine brightest. A recent story out of Zhengzhou, China, has captured millions’ online attention — and hearts. A man’s emotional decision to sell his only vehicle to pay for his wife’s treatment has gone viral, with many praising it as a testament to true love. This poignant tale has also brought renewed focus to a troubling health phenomenon: the rise in so-called “white lung” cases, and public concern over potential COVID-19 vaccine aftereffects.
The power of love in the face of despair
Over the recent New Year holiday, Mr. Zhai from Zhengzhou was thrust into every spouse’s nightmare. His wife, initially suffering from what seemed to be a common cold, rapidly declined into critical condition. Her lungs had turned opaque white on scans — a severe respiratory failure dubbed “white lung” — and she soon experienced multiple organ failure. For more than 20 days, she has remained in the intensive care unit under constant monitoring.
Faced with mounting medical bills and no guarantee of recovery, Mr. Zhai made the gut-wrenching choice to sell his minivan. That vehicle wasn’t just a means of transport — it was his livelihood. But for Mr. Zhai, no sacrifice was too great.
Fighting back tears during a local TV interview, he explained: “We’ve been together for over twenty-five years. She was my first love, and I’ve done my best to give her everything she’s ever wanted. She’s always treated me well, too. After so many years together, I can’t bear to let go. If I can see her one more day, that’s one more day I can breathe easy.”

This story struck a nerve online
As word of Mr. Zhai’s devotion spread across Chinese social media, comments poured in. Some users said: “Their love makes me believe true love still exists,” while others added: “This breaks my heart. I hope she survives,” and “The most romantic thing is being there when someone needs you most, wrapping them in the warmest hug.”
For many, this was more than just a love story — it was a rare and raw reminder of human resilience in an era marked by medical uncertainty and emotional fatigue.
What is ‘white lung’ and why are people worried?
“White lung” refers to a severe form of lung infection or inflammation in which X-ray or CT scans reveal lungs that appear almost entirely white due to fluid accumulation, infection, or scarring. While “white lung” isn’t an official medical diagnosis, it has become a catch-all phrase in China to describe the extreme lung damage seen in some recent cases.
Since late 2022 and into 2025, similar symptoms have been observed across China. Patients — many of whom were relatively healthy and middle-aged — suddenly succumbed to respiratory failure. Social media platforms have been flooded with anecdotal accounts of sudden deaths, long hospitalizations, and overwhelmed crematoriums.
Connecting the dots: Is the vaccine to blame?
This latest wave of “white lung” cases has reignited a sensitive debate: Could these conditions be linked to COVID-19 vaccines?
Some citizens believe so. In the city of Xuchang, a man named Mr. Shao told a New Tang Dynasty reporter that he skipped his uncle’s funeral out of fear of infection. “They call it the flu, but it’s COVID,” he said. “The government just won’t admit it. My uncle was healthy before, but after getting vaccinated, his body started failing.”
Other reports followed a similar pattern. In Beijing, a Mr. Li shared that both his neighbor and coworker — both vaccinated drivers in their 40s and 50s — died unexpectedly. “They were in good shape before. After three vaccine doses, their health rapidly deteriorated. I believe it seriously damaged their heart function.”
Mr. Li also claimed that authorities are blocking information about the real cause of death: “They call it the flu, but young people are dying. That never happened before the vaccine. When vaccines were pushed, celebrities promoted them on TV. Many people trusted them and got misled.”
Not everyone got vaccinated, and some say that made a difference
Zhang Ling (a pseudonym), a Beijing dance teacher, said her entire family refused the COVID-19 vaccine and none have been infected. “But my students and relatives who did get vaccinated all had issues — some died unexpectedly. One relative, a healthy young man in his 30s, got a cold and suddenly died. He had received all three doses.”
She also mentioned a colleague who developed severe blood clots after vaccination. “His leg stopped working overnight.”
According to multiple interviews, people across China are increasingly questioning the safety and effectiveness of the domestic vaccines, particularly those produced by companies like Sinovac. Though official channels deny major side effects, public trust has been eroded. Sinovac ceased vaccine production in early 2024, but many families still demand answers and accountability.

A quiet storm: Silence from the top
Despite the rising concern, Chinese authorities continue to downplay the situation. Medical personnel are reportedly prohibited from sharing photos or videos of overwhelmed facilities. Any suggestion that “white lung” might be connected to the vaccine is swiftly censored online.
While it’s true that no definitive scientific link has been established between COVID-19 vaccines and “white lung,” the sheer number of anecdotal stories is fueling widespread anxiety.
Holding on to hope
As China grapples with these health crises, personal stories like Mr. Zhai’s shine through the fog of uncertainty. His tears, his sacrifice, and his unyielding hope offer a counterpoint to the fear and confusion that surround the medical mysteries of the post-pandemic world.
At its core, this story is not just about “white lung” illness or policy — it’s about a man fighting for the woman he loves.
