In the heart of southern Africa, a story unfolded that captured the hearts of people worldwide. It began in Botswana’s harsh, untamed wilderness, where a tiny, paralyzed puppy named Poppy defied all odds. This little dog crawled through predator-filled terrain, without food or water, driven by an indomitable will to survive. Her journey and resilience inspired a global outpouring of compassion.
Crawling through the wilderness with hope in her eyes
Deep in the Okavango region — where expansive savannahs meet desert sands, and where lions, hyenas, and elephants roam — scientists conducting elephant research were stunned when a small, injured dog appeared at their remote camp. Her hind legs were immobile, and her frail, mud-soaked body told a silent story of immense struggle.
One of the researchers, Susanne Vogel, recalled the shock: “There was no sign of human habitation for miles. No one knew where she had come from or how long she had crawled. But her eyes told us everything — we saw a desperate, brave creature pleading for help.”

Resilience in the face of abandonment
Closer inspection revealed a grim truth: Poppy had suffered a traumatic spinal injury, likely from a heavy impact or being run over. Abandoned in the wilderness with no hope of survival, she somehow clawed her way toward the only humans she could find. Despite her paralysis, Poppy had chosen to fight.
The team sprang into action. They cleaned her, fed her, and gave her a name — Poppy. Determined to save her, they embarked on a grueling 8-hour drive over treacherous terrain, followed by a river crossing, to reach veterinary care. There, it was discovered that Poppy was just seven months old and would likely never walk again unless she underwent complex spinal surgery.
Why the world fell in love with Poppy
Though the outlook was bleak, the researchers refused to give up. Amanda Stronza, one of the camp members, said it best: “She fought to live. She found us when she needed us the most. Ending her life would mean ignoring her will to survive.”
Amanda launched a GoFundMe campaign, sharing Poppy’s story online. The response was overwhelming. Moved by the determination of this paralyzed puppy, people from around the world donated over $10,000 — far surpassing the original $3,000 goal. These funds ensured Poppy could receive ongoing medical treatment, including anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy.
To everyone’s amazement, Poppy began making progress. She could briefly stand and even wiggle her hind legs. Though experts in Johannesburg ultimately ruled out surgery due to the severity of her spinal break, they offered a solution: a custom wheelchair.

A new chapter in a new country
Poppy’s incredible spirit didn’t just heal hearts — it found her a new home. Amanda’s friend, MaryBeth Hastings, who lives in Washington, D.C., was moved by Poppy’s journey and offered to adopt her. Poppy soon flew across the globe to the U.S., welcoming her into a loving family. In January, she received her first wheelchair and began exploring her new life with the same joyful determination that had carried her through the African wilds.
Amanda reflects: “She made it to where she needed to be. That kind of spirit, that kind of will — it touches something deep in all of us.”
