The Taichung International Flower Carpet Festival, held annually alongside the Xinshe Sea of Flowers, has long been celebrated as Taiwan’s most anticipated floral extravaganza. Each year, the festival draws millions of visitors eager to immerse themselves in vast fields of blossoms, creative displays, and a rich blend of culture and local agriculture. In 2025, the event once again elevates the floral experience by merging artistic innovation with community participation and sustainable values.
The theme and creative inspiration of the Flower Carpet Festival
This year’s Flower Carpet Festival takes a bold, creative leap by drawing inspiration from Cartoon Network’s beloved animated series The Powerpuff Girls. Iconic characters and scenes from the show are transformed into vibrant floral art, offering visitors a blend of nostalgia and visual wonder. The theme infuses the grounds with color, imagination, and a playful spirit that resonates with both children and adults.

At the heart of the festival stands its most ambitious main flower carpet to date — an impressive installation soaring 18 meters (59 feet) high and spanning 60 meters (196 feet). Featured at its peak is a floral reinterpretation of Mojo Jojo’s Lair, turning the mischievous villain’s hideout into a whimsical botanical landmark. Every 30 minutes, the installation comes alive through an automated performance of bubbles, mist effects, and mechanical movements, creating a magical, immersive spectacle.

Across the venue, floral installations highlight familiar characters such as Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and Professor Utonium. Visitors encounter classic scenes from the animated world, reimagined through flowers, sculptural forms, and interactive elements, enriching the festival’s storytelling.
Community participation and sustainable values of the Flower Carpet Festival
Beyond its visual grandeur, the festival emphasizes sustainability and community engagement. Over 300 local seniors, children, and residents from the Xinshe and Dongshi Districts were invited to participate in floral creation projects, making this year’s event a collective artistic endeavor that embodies local pride.

The city government has also incorporated the “Central Taiwan Agricultural Marketing Exhibition,” forming the region’s largest agricultural exchange platform. Specialty products from eight counties or cities — including Taichung — are showcased, supporting local farmers and enhancing the region’s agritourism economy. The Powerpuff Girls Limited Edition Pavilion features over 200 merchandise items, including fruit gift boxes co-developed with small-scale farmers and DIY mushroom cultivation kits that highlight local agricultural creativity.

In keeping with the principles of “sharing, recycling, and regeneration,” select floral materials will be distributed to community groups and schools after the festival concludes, extending the life and meaning of the blossoms beyond the event.
The Flower Carpet Festival’s scale and floral highlights
The 2025 Xinshe Flower Sea & Taichung International Flower Carpet Festival officially opened on November 8 and will run until November 30. This year’s venue spans an expansive 39.5 hectares (97.6 acres ), combining the Flower Sea, Flower Carpet, and Zhongnong Exhibition & Sale into one grand celebration.

A dedicated exhibition on rose variety rights highlights advances in floral breeding and intellectual property protection. More than 60,000 plants, including Salvia splendens, Gomphrena globosa, and various annual flowers, form a vibrant 12.5-hectare (30.8 acres) floral tapestry. These are complemented by fields of cosmos, zinnia, and buckwheat that create sweeping, colorful vistas.

Art installations made from sustainable materials such as flower pots and wooden pallets add visual interest and create popular photo spots throughout the exhibition area. Meanwhile, themed sales zones — “Kinmen Specialties,” “Young Farmers Zone,” and “Mountain Town Agricultural Promotion” — offer visitors a wide range of agricultural products and cultural experiences.
The Flower Carpet Festival’s cultural significance and regional development
Now in its 18th year, the Xinshe Flower Sea Festival has evolved beyond traditional flower-viewing to become a model for integrating local industries, agriculture, and tourism. The event links four agricultural associations, five shopping districts, and eleven leisure agriculture zones across Taichung’s mountainous and coastal regions. Together, these partnerships promote regional cultural heritage and seasonal festivities such as the Dongshi New Rice Cake Festival, the Xinshe Nine Villages Mazu Pilgrimage, floral events featuring plum, cherry, pear, peach, and tung blossoms, and firefly-watching.

With an expected visitor count exceeding two million and projected economic benefits surpassing NT$1.2 billion (US$37 billion), the festival continues to enhance the appeal of central Taiwan’s rural leisure industry. It stands as a testament to sustainable development, cultural vitality, and the enduring beauty of nature.
