A tranquil world beyond the scenery
When people speak of Lover’s Lake in Northern Taiwan’s Keelung City, they often think first of its romantic suspension bridge, the castle-like observation tower rising above the trees, the charming lakeside pavilions, and the lush green surrounding Lake Footpath and Surrounding Mountain Footpath. The lake mirrors the surrounding hills and drifting clouds, creating a scene of poetic beauty. Yet beyond this breathtaking landscape lies another, quieter wonder — one that unfolds gently beneath the surface of the water.
A gathering of hundreds of turtles
Leaning over the railing and gazing into the lake, visitors are often surprised to discover that it is home to hundreds of turtles. They swim leisurely in groups, occasionally surfacing for air, their rounded shells gliding just above the waterline. Some compete playfully, paddling with surprising speed and stirring soft ripples across the lake. Others climb onto rocks or fallen branches, lining up side by side to bask in the warm sunlight. Turtles of different sizes — large and small — share the same space, creating a lively yet harmonious spectacle.

It is said that most of these turtles, along with several koi fish, were released into the lake by visitors over the years. What may have begun as individual acts of goodwill has gradually formed a remarkable congregation of life, shaping a unique ecological scene that now defines part of the lake’s character.

Koi as living brushstrokes
Among the turtles swim several koi, their red, white, and golden bodies moving like flowing ribbons beneath the surface. Their scales shimmer when sunlight filters through the water, adding gentle flashes of color to the green depths. The koi glide gracefully, unhurried and serene, sometimes weaving between the turtles as if sharing a silent understanding. Together, they form a living painting — an ever-changing composition of motion and light.

Capturing moments of calm
Through the lens of a camera, these slow, peaceful movements become even more touching. A turtle stretching its neck above the surface, a koi turning softly in the water, sunlight sparkling on ripples — each frame captures a moment of quiet companionship. The rhythm of their movement seems to slow time itself, inviting visitors to pause, breathe, and reconnect with nature’s gentle pace.

At Keelung Lover’s Lake, the beauty of mountains and water may first capture the eye, but it is the sight of hundreds of turtles and a few graceful koi swimming together that truly soothes the soul. In the soft breeze and shimmering light, the lake becomes more than a scenic destination — it becomes a sanctuary of coexistence, tranquility, and healing.
