Health and wellness are a big trend, and people of all ages are concerned about them. However, wrong health concepts and bad habits can be very harmful to your body. For example, ten daily habits unknowingly harm people’s physical and mental health.
1. Waking up with a cup of coffee
The Daily Mail reported that a South Carolina physical therapist, Chris Boettcher, shared health advice on social media. He advised not to “drink coffee early in the morning.” Drinking coffee when you wake up can make the body even more dehydrated. Caffeine is a diuretic that causes the body to lose water. He recommends drinking about four glasses of water before drinking coffee.
2. Using your mobile phone when you wake up
Using a mobile phone when you wake up can trigger a stress response, leading to the release of cortisol in the body. This, in turn, affects your mood during the day, says Boettcher. In addition, studies have shown that mobile phones can reduce people’s awareness of their surroundings.
3. Breathing through your mouth
Some people habitually breathe through their mouths instead of their noses. However, this can lead to a dry mouth and increased bacteria in the mouth, which can lead to tooth decay or infection.
4. Turning on the mobile phone before going to bed
The blue light from mobile phones can disrupt sleep and keep the brain in “active” mode. Boettcher suggests turning off all devices after 5 p.m. and using the Do Not Disturb mode.
5. Eating highly refined cereal for breakfast
Cold cereal is usually rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar, which can rapidly increase blood sugar in your body. Instead of grains, Boettcher recommends a protein- and fat-based breakfast, including eggs, oatmeal, berries, and nuts.
6. Low protein intake
Dieting blindly can lead to a massive loss of protein in the body. Boettcher suggests that the core of a protein diet is to prolong satiety, which is an excellent way to lose weight without damaging your health too much.
7. Sitting at a desk for a long time
Sitting at a desk for more than six hours increases the risk of several complications, including poor posture, weight gain, and chronic disease. If you can get up and move around regularly, you can reduce the risk of harmful effects on your health.
8. Drinking soft drinks and fruit juices
These drinks are sweet and tasty, but have no fiber, are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, and cause blood sugar to soar.
9. Drinking alcohol with dinner
Is it true that “A big drink is bad for you, but a small drink is good for you?” Many people like to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with dinner after a hard day’s work, but Boettcher warns that it can lead to weight gain, anxiety, an increased risk of chronic disease, and disturbed sleep. Drinking a few glasses of wine a week won’t kill people, but it can be fatal if you drink it every day, says Boettcher.
10. Watching a bright screen before bed
Another complication of watching screens in bed is that they can disrupt sleep. The blue light emitted by screens inhibits the release of melatonin in the brain, the hormone that makes people fall asleep. Boettcher recommends avoiding this by using a blue light blocker or simply turning off the screen an hour before bedtime.
