Forests are full of life, but they can also be deadly. In Thailand, three boys became lost after venturing into a protected wildlife sanctuary to gather mushrooms. For days, they struggled to find their way out. Then, just as hope faded, an unexpected encounter with a little yellow dog helped lead them to safety.
A little yellow dog brings hope
On November 1, 2023, three boys, ages 14 to 16, entered the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Ban Rai District, Uthai Thani Province, Thailand. They hoped to collect wild mushrooms to sell, earning money to help their families with everyday expenses and school fees.
As they ventured deeper into the forest, however, the boys lost their bearings. Despite repeated attempts to find their way back, they kept going in circles, as though some unseen force were preventing them from leaving. Before long, they realized they were hopelessly lost.
With only a small amount of food, the boys faced the difficult task of surviving in unfamiliar wilderness. They spent the nights outdoors near a stream, exposed to the damp conditions and surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Although physically and emotionally exhausted, they continued encouraging one another, hoping that someone would eventually find them.

Meanwhile, their disappearance had prompted a search involving forest rangers, rescue volunteers, and local residents. Their families grew increasingly worried as the hours passed without news. The sanctuary’s dense vegetation and rugged terrain made the search particularly challenging, while dangerous wildlife, including wild elephants, buffaloes, and gaur, posed additional risks.
By November 3, the boys had been missing for more than two days. They had wandered far from their original route, and local reports indicated they had traveled roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) during their ordeal. Yet the searchers had still not managed to locate them.
Then something extraordinary happened.
A small yellow dog named Chao Yot, which had accompanied one of the search teams into the forest, wandered ahead and found the missing boys. Around the same time, the boys heard people calling out in the distance. Realizing that help might finally be near, they followed the dog through the forest until they encountered members of the search party.
The boys were finally safe. After enduring two nights in the wilderness, they were reunited with their relieved families, bringing an end to an ordeal that could easily have ended in tragedy.
The rescue was especially remarkable given the difficult terrain and the dangers posed by wild animals. What began as a simple effort to earn money for their families had nearly cost the boys their lives. Fortunately, the rescuers’ efforts, along with the timely appearance of a perceptive little yellow dog, helped bring all three home safely.
A faithful dog survives 10 weeks beside her owner
The three boys’ ordeal ended in a joyful reunion, thanks in part to an unexpected canine companion. Another remarkable story, this time from the Colorado mountains, illustrates a different kind of bond between humans and dogs — one that endured even after tragedy struck.
On August 19, 2023, 71-year-old Richard “Rich” Moore of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, set out with his beloved Jack Russell terrier, Finney, to climb Blackhead Peak in the San Juan Mountains. The mountain rises approximately 12,500 feet above sea level. Moore was an experienced hiker, but when he failed to return home, his family grew concerned.
Search-and-rescue teams launched an extensive effort to find him, using a helicopter to search the rugged mountainside and examining the trails near where his vehicle had been parked. Despite their efforts, they found no trace of Moore or his dog. As the days turned into weeks, the search yielded no further clues.
Then, on October 30, more than 10 weeks after Moore disappeared, a hunter discovered his body in a remote area of the San Juan Mountains. Beside him was Finney, who, remarkably, was still alive.

The little dog had remained near her owner throughout an extraordinary ordeal. She was severely underweight, having lost approximately half her body weight, but had somehow survived in the wilderness for more than two months. Despite her weakened condition, Finney was still protective of Moore when rescuers arrived.
Authorities later determined that Moore had died of hypothermia, with no evidence of foul play. It remains uncertain how Finney survived for so long. Delinda VanneBrightyn, a volunteer with Taos Search and Rescue, suggested that the resourceful terrier likely relied on her natural instincts, hunting small animals for food and finding water in the mountains. She also had to avoid predators and endure the harsh conditions of the wilderness.
After being rescued, Finney received veterinary care and was reunited with Moore’s family. Although she was dangerously thin, she gradually regained her weight and strength. Within weeks, she was walking with Moore’s wife, Dana Holby, again, offering comfort and companionship as the family mourned its loss.
