Coffee is a popular beverage worldwide, with approximately one trillion cups consumed annually, generating around 30 billion kilograms of coffee grounds. However, there has been a lack of effective methods to repurpose them. Now, companies have successfully developed technology to transform them into raw materials for manufacturing products, giving them unprecedented value.
Clothing manufacturing with coffee grounds
A Taiwanese company spent three years developing a process to extract coffee yarn pellets from coffee grounds. These are then processed into nano-sized coffee yarns, which are integrated into fibers to create functional textiles, for which they have applied for patents.
After professional treatment, clothing made from coffee yarn does not retain the coffee smell but preserves the beneficial properties of coffee grounds. These garments offer odor control, quick-drying, and UV protection features, significantly contributing to environmental protection. They can be used in base layers, mid-layers, and outer layers of clothing, effectively absorbing moisture from the skin or external sources. When there are unpleasant odors from the body or environment, they are absorbed physically. A model wearing a comfortable and casual shirt made from coffee grounds looks no different from regular clothing, but it is cheaper to produce and offers more functionality.
The company plans to further develop coffee socks, coffee underwear, and even coffee bed sheets, indicating a vast market potential. Creativity can transform even inconspicuous coffee groundsinto valuable “golden sand.”
Footwear manufacturing using coffee grounds
To realize a circular economy, another Taiwanese company has developed shoes using coffee grounds as raw materials, exporting products to around 40 countries worldwide. Xu Jiaming, CEO of Chilu International Co., Ltd., stated that around 2017, they began exploring how to turn these into raw materials for their self-branded shoes. After extensive research and development, they successfully created “coffee ground shoes.” Based on a standard cup of coffee from convenience stores, approximately 15 cups can make a pair of rain boots, five cups a pair of walking shoes, and two cups a pair of flip-flops.
Xu Jiaming mentioned that the related products have obtained 10 international patents and have won design awards in various countries. The shoe uppers, insoles, and outsoles are all made from coffee grounds, comprising about 40 to 60 percent of the raw materials, depending on the manufacturing process. As the concept of a circular economy becomes more widespread, these products are now available in over 40 countries across Europe, America, and Asia.
Repurposing coffee grounds at home: Creative and eco-friendly uses
Coffee grounds aren’t just waste; they can be a versatile and sustainable resource for everyday use. Here are some innovative ways to give them a second life:
1. A natural stain remover
Coffee grounds mixed with soapy water create a powerful cleaning paste. Thanks to the activated carbon in the grounds, tough grime and fine dirt can be scrubbed away effortlessly. This eco-friendly solution is perfect for tackling stubborn messes.
2. Reviving scratched wooden furniture
Minor scratches on wooden furniture can be diminished by applying a mixture of coffee grounds and water with a cotton swab. Gently rub the area, and watch the scratch blend into the wood’s natural color.
3. Cleaning barbecue grills
Barbecue grills often accumulate rust and grease, making them difficult to clean. A simple solution is to scrub the surface with a scouring pad dipped in coffee grounds. Rinse with warm water, and the grill will shine again.
4. A natural insect repellent
The scent and alkaloids in coffee grounds repel insects effectively. Dried or baked, they can be burned outdoors as a natural mosquito deterrent. Additionally, sprinkling them near ant nests or flower beds can disrupt ant trails and protect your plants.
5. A nutrient boost for plants
Coffee grounds are rich in essential nutrients like calcium, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, making them an excellent natural fertilizer. They are particularly beneficial for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias, and roses. Simply add them to your flower pots to nourish plants without the odor of commercial fertilizers.
6. Exfoliation and skincare
Adding coffee grounds to your body wash creates a gentle exfoliating scrub that removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and rejuvenated. The grounds also help improve circulation, adding a revitalizing touch to your skincare routine.
7. Microwave cleaning made easy
To naturally clean your microwave, mix coffee grounds with water and microwave the mixture for two minutes. The steam loosens stuck-on food particles, and the warm coffee solution can be used to wipe the interior clean.
8. A powerful deodorizer
Coffee grounds are excellent at neutralizing odors. Rubbing them on your hands removes smells from garlic, onions, or seafood. Dried grounds can be placed in shoe cabinets to absorb moisture and freshen the air. For refrigerators, place them in a cup covered with perforated plastic wrap to deodorize and dehumidify effectively.
