Chapter 4: Healing the sick, a breakthrough in medical principles
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang comes from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Although he graduated from South China University of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering, driven by his interest and desire to help others, he ultimately chose TCM as his profession. With a solid foundation, he successfully obtained TCM licenses in multiple provinces across Canada.
He has many patients, including Chinese people who turned to him after Western medicine could not help them, as well as many Westerners who pay out of pocket to see a TCM doctor. “Many Westerners particularly believe in TCM,” Dr. Yang Xiaoguang explained. “They think Western medicine has messed up their bodies and are willing to spend a lot of money to see a TCM practitioner.” His true transformation in medical philosophy occurred after he began practicing Falun Dafa.
“I used to achieve good treatment results, turning many patients from being sick to a sub-healthy state, which allowed for quick profits, and patients would continue to come back,” Dr. Yang Xiaoguang candidly admitted his previous medical philosophy. “After learning Falun Dafa, I realized this was not right. Achieving complete health from a sub-healthy state requires enough patience and time.”
Therefore, he assumed greater responsibility for his patients, honestly informing them of the expected healing time and cost so that they would have a clear understanding before treatment. Moreover, his insights into medical principles underwent a profound breakthrough.
“I have learned TCM since childhood and know that often just treating the disease is ineffective because a person’s spirit is trapped,” Dr. Yang Xiaoguang explained. “In the past, when we used acupuncture, the effects were poor when needling the hands and feet, but very effective when needling the head. This actually demonstrates the dominant role of the spirit over the body.”
“When I read Zhuan Falun, I felt that Master must be particularly knowledgeable about TCM! The book discusses many key aspects of TCM,” Dr. Yang Xiaoguang shared. “Master mentioned that when looking at a person, if they appear ‘very unhealthy, with a sallow complexion,’ the implication of this statement is quite significant!”
He added that TCM emphasizes the differentiation of syndromes based on yin and yang, exterior and interior, cold and heat, deficiency and excess, known as the “Eight Principles.” Among these, yin and yang are core concepts, and there is a saying in TCM: “Yin and yang are the two principles, along with the six essentials.”
“My personal understanding is that Master does not focus on the ‘six essentials’ of exterior and interior, cold and heat, deficiency and excess, but directly emphasizes looking at whether a person is ‘sallow.’ This is key to diagnosing a disease, immediately grasping the most important principle of ‘yin and yang’!” he said.
“Master understands the theory of yin and yang very well; otherwise, he wouldn’t start by mentioning the most important aspects. This deepened my respect for Dafa, knowing that improving one’s character and letting go of attachments will definitely yield tenfold better treatment results!”

Chapter 5: Lighting the heart lamp, rooting out illness
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang integrates the principles he has realized from his practice into his treatments. He recognizes that for chronic diseases, especially those that Western medicine deems “untreatable,” spiritual healing is the key to addressing the fundamental issues.
In Saskatchewan, an elderly gentleman in his seventies suffered from high blood pressure and complete intestinal failure. He asked Dr. Yang Xiaoguang to cure his illness so he could completely stop taking antihypertensive medication. Dr. Yang Xiaoguang told him it would take three to six months.
During the treatment, Dr. Yang Xiaoguang taught the elderly man to recite “Falun Dafa is good” and recommended that he watch Shen Yun performances, which promote traditional Chinese culture. “This elderly gentleman tended to hold in his anger, so I helped him find a new goal in life, healing him spiritually,” Yang said.
Three months later, the elderly man completely stopped taking antihypertensive medication, and his blood pressure was very well controlled. Dr. Yang Xiaoguang remarked: “This is all thanks to Falun Dafa, which resolved the fundamental problems!” There was an older man with diabetes who needed insulin and had complications affecting his eyes and feet. He also had serious digestive system issues, with an unusually enlarged small intestine that made it difficult for food to pass, and he sometimes only had a bowel movement once every ten days.
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang knew that this patient was overeating and unwilling to change his lifestyle. He told this Christian patient about the beauty of Falun Dafa, thereby helping him understand the importance of controlling his appetite. “He was very willing to read Dafa’s books and easily understood the practice. During our discussions, a year passed unknowingly, and he no longer needed Western medicine to control his symptoms.”
Most gratifying for Dr. Yang Xiaoguang was helping children with depression and mental illnesses. One boy, addicted to computers, games, and music, showed no interest in his studies, had no friends, and often lost his temper, causing great distress to his family. Dr. Yang Xiaoguang candidly told the child: “What you’re doing is very selfish. You can’t disrupt the entire family’s life just because you’re sick! You need to learn to consider the hard work your parents put into earning money and taking care of you.”
He explained the principles of Falun Dafa to the child, guiding him to look inward and to consider not only his own emotions but also others’ feelings. “He found it very reasonable and began practicing Falun Gong with me,” Dr. Yang Xiaoguang said with shining eyes. “The child gradually became cheerful, graduated from high school, and was admitted to a university in the computer science department. He now also practices Falun Dafa, and all his ailments have been resolved.”
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang summarized TCM as emphasizing “the unity of Heaven and humanity,” in which humans are part of the universe and must align with its laws. “If a person’s emotions resonate with the universe, for example, through meditation, once fully in a state of tranquility, the blood and meridians of the body open up, and past illnesses can be resolved. This is the best state.” For TCM practitioners, practicing Falun Dafa allows for more concrete treatment of spiritual issues, leading to significantly better treatment outcomes.

Chapter 6: Essence lost in TCM transmission
As a TCM practitioner based overseas, Dr. Yang Xiaoguang is acutely aware of the significant loss of TCM transmission in mainland China. “The transmission of TCM in the Qing and Ming dynasties was very complete, but in modern times, the transmission of TCM in mainland China has become incomplete.”
He again mentioned the essence of “the two principles of yin and yang along with the six essentials.” “In TCM’s differentiation of syndromes, yin and yang are core concepts. However, in the current textbooks for TCM in mainland China, the eight principles of differentiation only include ‘yang’ and not ‘yin,’ meaning half of the material is lost, leading to poor treatment outcomes.” For instance, in acupuncture, there is a distinction between the “meridian” and “maoyou” heavenly circuits, yet many current students learn only the “meridian” heavenly circuit. What is the “maoyou” heavenly circuit? This is another half that is missing.
In the “organ differentiation” section, all five organs and six bowels are listed as requiring treatment, but mainland textbooks teach only the differentiation of the five organs. “The brilliance of TCM lies in the differentiation of the six bowels! For example, to treat heart disease, one must regulate the small intestine to expel the disease. But now many TCM practitioners in mainland China have never even heard of treating the small intestine. All illnesses can only be cured by treating both the five organs and six bowels together.”
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang said: “Every aspect of TCM in mainland medical schools has lost half of its content, leading to unsatisfactory therapeutic effects.” He believes that through practicing Falun Dafa, he has grasped the true meaning of the universe and life, enabling him to better understand and apply the essence of TCM’s “unity of Heaven and humanity,” thereby helping more patients achieve physical and mental health at their roots.
From childhood ailments to life-and-death moments on icy roads; from confusion in his TCM career to finding the proper way of healers in Dafa; from miraculous cases of saving lives to transforming his own, his family’s, and others’ destinies through character cultivation.
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang has consistently strived to practice the principles of Falun Dafa. He hopes to draw on his personal experiences and numerous healing cases to demonstrate to the world that Falun Dafa not only elevates practitioners’ minds and bodies, but also, through its principles of “Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance,” enlightens people’s hearts, guiding them toward health and brightness at the root.
In the end, Dr. Yang Xiaoguang sincerely shares his wish: “Falun Dafa has taught me what it means to be a good person, and TCM has taught me how to save lives. The combination of the two is the true way of a healer… Practicing Falun Gong is far more effective than general health maintenance or cultivation; I hope everyone can have a better body.”
Dr. Yang Xiaoguang’s story continues, but he has already shared the most important secret with the world: As long as one is willing to walk toward the light of Dafa, life will become even more beautiful.
