Speech is more than mere communication; it’s a form of spiritual discipline deeply ingrained in our daily lives. Without proper attention to this aspect, numerous troubles can arise, as words wield the power to shape realities and relationships.

Insights from Wang Yangming

Wang Yangming, a renowned philosopher of the Ming Dynasty, provided a profound lesson in the power of words during a stroll with a student. They came across two men engaged in a fervent dispute. One accused: “You have no justice!” while the other countered: “You have no conscience!” Observing this, the student turned to Wang Yangming and remarked: “Listen, teacher, they are discussing moral principles.” However, Wang Yangming offered a different perspective: “No, they are cursing at each other.” He elucidated: “To hold oneself accountable to justice and conscience is to engage in moral discussion. To impose these standards on others, however, is akin to cursing at them.” This incident serves as a reminder of the impact of words and the importance of introspection over judgment in speech.

The dual nature of language

Interactions are often colored by the language we use. Praise can be a form of kindness, while gossip and slander, even unintentionally spread, can create harmful cycles. Thus, the adage goes: “Rumors stop with the wise.” We must be careful not to destroy precious goodwill for the fleeting satisfaction of sharp words. Language, while a tool for expressing thoughts and emotions, can also be the root of conflicts when used inappropriately.

Socrates and the art of oration

The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, famous for his oratory skills, once encountered a young man eager to learn this art. After the young man had spoken at length about the importance of oration, Socrates requested double the tuition fee. Confused, the young man inquired why. Socrates replied: “Because in addition to teaching you the art of speaking, I must also teach you the value of silence.” This anecdote underscores the importance of not only of good speech, but also knowing when being quiet is the more powerful option.

The importance of thoughtful speech

An ancient saying warns: “A single word can destroy a lifetime’s fortune.” Speaking with caution is the key to self-cultivation. In everyday conversations, our speech is often without much thought, but a slight change in wording can significantly alter the tone and meaning, preventing misunderstandings and honoring the art of language.

The subtlety of language and speech

Consider the subtle differences in phrases: “I asked him to come” versus “I invited him”; “You listen to me” versus “Let’s talk”; “Don’t regret it” versus “Would you like to reconsider?”; “You be careful” versus “Perhaps caution is warranted.” These examples illustrate how the same message can be conveyed more gently, preventing misunderstandings and honoring the artistry of language in our speech.

A historical example of eloquence

A telling example involves Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty. Upon ascending the throne, he sought a divination in order to find out how many generations his dynasty would last. He was dismayed to receive the prediction of “one.” Emperor Wu was very unhappy. His ministers were so scared that no one dared to make a sound.

In this tense moment, Pei Kai, the Counselor-in-chief, stepped forward with wisdom: “I have heard that if the sky becomes one, it will be clear; if the land becomes one, it will be at peace; and if the king becomes one, he will win the heartfelt support of his subjects.” His words transformed the Emperor’s worry into joy and earned him admiration for his eloquence. This story illustrates that the art of speaking transcends mere communication — it’s about interpreting the ebb and flow of life’s uncertainties, transforming moments of despair into ones of hope, and guiding thoughts towards a more positive and contemplative direction.
