China, a land steeped in history and culture, is also home to some of the most intriguing paranormal events. Today, we delve into two of the most talked-about supernatural occurrences that have captured the nation’s imagination. These occurrences particularly resonate with those often fascinated by the blend of ancient lore and modern developments.

The dragon pillars of Shanghai

The tale of Shanghai’s elevated dragon pillars in the southern region is almost a household legend. These pillars, which support the city’s overpasses, are not just feats of engineering, but are shrouded in stories that intertwine the mystical and paranormal with the mundane. The locals whisper about their mysterious origins, and the name evokes images of ancient Chinese dragons, symbols of power and good fortune.

The ‘nail house’

In China, a “nail house” is a home whose owner refuses to make way for development. In this case, the nail house was the Mountain Goddess Temple in Beijing’s Chaoyang District.

The Mountain Goddess Temple, constructed during the Ming Dynasty, is one of the city’s most renowned Taishan temples. Despite its dilapidated state and history of earthquake damage and repurposing as a school, it is revered as a dwelling of the divine and a gem of feng shui. The temple’s resilience during constructing two major Olympic venues only added to its legend.

In preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, iconic venues, such as the National Stadium, or “Bird’s Nest,” and the National Aquatics Center, or “Water Cube,” were planned to be constructed near the Mountain Goddess Temple.

The Bird’s Nest paranormal incident

As the demolition began to make way for the Birds Nest, a terrifying whirlwind swept through the site, paralyzing operations, injuring 44 people, and claiming two lives. Adding to the mystery, Internet users reported that a massive hole filled with snakes was discovered at the Water Cube site the day after the whirlwind.

Construction halted, and that evening, both the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube experienced unexplained power outages. Meanwhile, the Mountain Goddess Temple stood unharmed and was brightly lit despite the whirlwind and power outage.

This series of eerie paranormal events led to a mass exodus of workers from the site. Eventually, officials reconsidered their plans and decided to relocate the Bird’s Nest by a hundred meters to prevent further disturbance of the sacred site.

The Water Cube dust devil

On August 27, 2004, a dust devil struck the site during the construction of the nearby Water Cube. This was no ordinary gust of wind — a massive columnar vortex devastated the construction site.

The incident was captured on video, showcasing the ferocity of the wind as it hurled metal sheets into the air and snapped flagpoles. An office building and a nearby dormitory were severely damaged. Meteorologists labeled the phenomenon a dust devil, a rare occurrence for Beijing, which had no prior record of such events. This inexplicable wind left many questioning its origins, yet miraculously, the Mountain Goddess Temple remained untouched in this paranormal incident.

Conclusion: A harmony of old and new

These tales of the paranormal demonstrate China’s deep respect for its historical and spiritual roots, even as the country races toward modernization. The stories of the dragon pillars and the Mountain Goddess Temple serve as reminders that some forces, whether spiritual or cultural, command a reverence that transcends time. For those intrigued by the intersection of the past and the present, these events offer a fascinating glimpse into the enduring power of belief and tradition in the face of relentless progress.
