The Matrix, released in 1999, is one of the greatest movies ever. It puts forward the idea that people live in a giant computer simulation and that the world as we know it isn’t real. The universe is like a computer program with a set of algorithms that dictate how things happen.

Sometimes, things in this computer simulation are not as consistent as they should be because of a malfunction (glitch). That’s why we see confusing events in life, like going somewhere new and having an eerie feeling you’ve been there before. Over time, people have coined the phrase “glitch in the matrix” to explain an unusual occurrence that logic cannot explain.

Apparently, that’s what happened to Jade Gonzalez in 2022. Her incident occurred when she was working at her mom’s restaurant called Asadero el Fogon.

The lemon glitch

In a video Jade posted on TikTok captioned “Glitch in the Matrix? Lemon Emoji,” we see her working in their restaurant kitchen via the CCTV. She picks up a lemon, cuts it in half, then into quarters. She leaves the chopped lemon on the counter and then goes to another counter to grab a plastic bag.

A whole lemon and a lemon cut in half sit on a bright yellow background next to a knife with a yellow handle.

She returns to the counter, and the half lemon she had cut into quarters is still fully intact. She hesitates for a moment, wondering what happened. She picks up and examines the lemon she had cut into quarters, and, sure enough, it’s not cut.

“I do remember cutting it all the way,” she told TODAY. “I can feel when the knife cuts down and it touches a table. So I’m 99.9 percent sure I cut it all.”

Jade believes it’s a glitch in holographic reality, and in her video, she proclaims: “I am freaking out because the lemon was not cut in half anymore. It was intact. And you can see me cut the lemon in half in the video. There was a glitch. This has never happened to me, and I don’t know how to act. I’m freaking out.”

Supporters and opponents of the glitch in the matrix video

Her video has garnered millions of views, and some believe it was an unexplainable event. One viewer comments: “We may have finally found a true glitch in the matrix,” while another says: “I literally saw the lemon put itself back.”

However, skeptics believe this is something easily explainable. Some said the video is entirely fake and made to garner views and attention. Others claim lemons sometimes meld back together if they are not separated immediately after being cut. But they say it takes hours to meld back together, and they’ve never seen it happen in seconds.

The scientific explanations for deja vu and glitches in the matrix

Some scientists and psychologists believe that phenomena like deja vu and “glitches in the matrix” may be explained by how our brains process information. Our brains are incredible organs that store and retrieve massive amounts of information.

The glitch in the system may be just a glitch in our brains. This event may happen because the brain may have problems with memory storage and retrieval. Instead of storing the acquired information in the short-term memory first, your new memory may go straight to the long-term memory bank. So, when retrieving that memory, you momentarily feel there’s something wrong with your reality.

Other experts explain that our perception is constantly compared, enhanced, and matched to known patterns, among other processes in our brain. So you may experience deja vu or glitches in the system because your brain sees patterns where there are none. Also, sometimes your brain may not function normally, and sleepiness, drug use, fatigue, seizures, or emotional moments may affect how you see reality.

Some theorize that these glitches may be evidence of a parallel universe. According to them, you may be seeing something that already happened to you in another universe, just that there was a glitch in our system, and things didn’t occur concurrently.

Enjoy the moment

Whether you believe glitches in the matrix can be explained logically or are paranormal events, enjoy the moment if it happens. It’s a mind-bending moment that shows us the mysteries of our minds and how our brains sometimes perceive reality.
