While dining at a restaurant in London, he saw a man in a white robe appear in a flash of light, who told him “Do not overeat” before disappearing. From that point onward, Emanuel Swedenborg discovered his ability to leave his physical body and travel to other realms. His body remained asleep, maintaining average temperature and breathing, while his spirit embarked on extraordinary journeys. He began writing about heaven and hell, angels and demons, the soul and body, faith and love. Initially, he published his works anonymously, with only a handful of people knowing about his spiritual travels.
Swedenborg’s revelation to the world
In 1759, three remarkable events catapulted Emanuel Swedenborg into the public eye. The first was the Stockholm Fire incident. While attending a dinner 400 kilometers away from Stockholm, he suddenly became agitated and announced that a fire had broken out in Stockholm. He accurately described the spread and eventual extinguishing of the fire days before official news reached them, confirming his account.
The second event involved the widow of the Dutch ambassador to Sweden. She sought Emanuel Swedenborg’s help to locate a receipt she could not find. After visiting him, the widow dreamt of her late husband showing her where the receipt was hidden. The next day, Emanuel Swedenborg called her and confirmed that he had also seen the ambassador in the spiritual realm.
The third event involved the Queen of Sweden, Louisa Ulrika. Intrigued by the stories about Emanuel Swedenborg, she invited him to the palace and asked him to convey a message to her deceased brother, the Prince of Prussia. Two weeks later, he returned to the court and whispered something to the queen that turned her pale and nearly made her faint. She confirmed that the information was a secret only known to her and her late brother.
