The unique feature of the Water and Fire Cave is caused by the natural combustion of methane gas, resulting in flames dancing on the surface of the water. This natural wonder is a rare phenomenon in only a few places worldwide and has long been a source of fascination and intrigue. It has attracted visitors from near and far for the unforgettable experience of seeing fire and water emerge from the same cave at the same time.

History

The history of Water and Fire Cave can be traced back over 300 years. There are several legends about the origin of the cave. Some said that in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), a group of soldiers discovered the cave while seeking shelter during a heavy rainstorm. Others said that the cave was found by a bamboo farmer during the Qing Dynasty while tending to his crops. Still others believed it was discovered in 1701 by a Fujianese monk from a nearby temple called Dasian (大仙寺).

According to Taiwanese folklore, the qilin, a mythical Chinese dragon-like creature, is said to have lived in the cave long ago. The spring water is his leftover urine, and the fire is his breath.

Another legend recounts a captivating tale of a fire dragon and a water dragon entwined in a grand battle. Both valiant creatures faced defeat, and in the aftermath, one transformed into the water that flows through the spring, while the other embodied the eternal flame that emanates from the same source. The large mural on the wall next to the cave, created by famous Taiwanese master sculptor Yang Ying-feng (楊英風), depicts two dragons fighting.

However, according to a compelling local legend, the cave is believed to be the fire-spitting head of the qilin (麒麟), a mythical Chinese creature. This association stems from Guanziling’s Pillow Mountain, also called Qilin Mountain (麒麟山). According to the tale, the fire emanating from the cave results from the qilin’s fiery breath, adding an enchanting touch to the mystical narrative.

It is said that the flame used to be intense and powerful, concentrated in a single point. However, after the devastating earthquake that struck the Baihe area in 1964, the fire was split, weakening its strength. Despite this transformation, the flame continues to burn to this day.
