If you had sleepovers as a child, you’ll remember them as fun. And even though sleeping is in the word sleepover, sleeping is the last thing you have on your mind. This is the time to bond, laugh, and create unforgettable memories.

Sleepovers should be well thought-out to ensure everyone enjoys their stay

1. Set the date and time

Choose a date that suits all your guests. A suitable date should fall on holidays or weekends when most people are free.

Also, ensure that you have a manageable guest list. A good rule of thumb is to divide your child’s age by two, and there you have your list. For example, if they are 10, invite about 5; if they are 6, about 3. Remember that you may need to make the number even so no one feels left out when playing games.

2. Inform parents or guests

If you have kids at your house, inform their parents. Having your child away from your sight is not an easy decision; parents need to know where they will be and what they’ll do.

Ensure you know if any child has any allergies, medications, anxiety issues, or physical or sensory challenges. Also, whom do you contact in case of an emergency?

3. Choose a theme

Make the sleepover party exciting by selecting a theme. Is it a classic pajama party, a retro movie night, or a tropical luau? Themes not only make your party fun, but they’ll also guide your planning and decorations.

4. Sleepover activities galore

Find amusing activities to keep your guests or children’s friends entertained. If it’s a movie marathon night, choose several movies that fit your audience and let the guests choose.

You can also encourage friendly competition with video, card, or board games. Or, for bonding, have a DIY crafts station where guests can make custom keepsakes like friendship bracelets or tie-dye t-shirts.

But what’s a slumber party without pillow fights, horror stories, or karaoke?

5. Plan snacks and refreshments

Since this is a sleepover and not a formal meal, go for a hassle-free dinner. Easy-to-eat meals like hotdogs or burgers, a popcorn bar with several toppings, or candies are great for this occasion. You can also have finger foods like nachos or sliders.

If your budget allows, you can order pizza or other deliveries. Remember to stock up on various beverages (caffeine-free drinks for kids). And as mentioned, consider any allergies when planning your menu.

Also, offer water only as the kids’ bedtime nears.

6. Create a perfect sleeping area

Your guests should be comfortable, so ensure you have enough duvets, pillows, and sleeping bags for everyone. As mentioned, most guests don’t even sleep on sleepovers, so have everyone or at least a group sleep in the same room. If they are kids, childproof everything in your home and ensure sharp objects, fire starters, rifles, or tripping hazards are removed.

Also, give your guests a tour of your home, show them where the bathrooms are and which rooms are out of bounds, and provide them with the ground rules.

Lastly, discuss toys or electronic accessories with your child. Which ones would they like to share, and which ones do they want locked away?

7. Be flexible

Ground rules are essential, no doubt. Without them, everything may turn into chaos. However, leave room for spontaneity because some of the best moments are born in the spur of the moment.

So whether it’s an impromptu dance or a spontaneous game, go with the flow — as long as it’s not dangerous or demeaning.

8. Photos and memories

Don’t forget to capture the magical moments of the slumber party. Your child will cherish these memories forever, so have your camera ready to capture candid moments. You can even create a DIY “photo booth” where everyone can take silly, memorable photos.

9. Don’t forget about breakfast

As the night turns to morning, ensure you have a breakfast plan. Like dinner, keep the breakfast simple. It can include fruits and vegetables with a dip, yogurt, juice, bagels, donuts, or homemade waffles.

Creating a memorable sleepover

Planning a slumber party is a labor of love that pays off in laughter, bonding, and memorable moments. You can create a fantastic atmosphere by planning the theme, guest list, refreshments, activities, and sleeping arrangements.

Embrace the joy of planning and make this a night to remember!
