Remember how you used to think your mom had some kind of magic touch to keep the house so clean? It almost felt like you’d need to spend all day, every day, to get anywhere close to that level of tidiness. But is it really necessary to dedicate your entire day to keep your home in order?

Good news — it’s not! Let’s face it, cleaning isn’t exactly the most fun activity for most of us. But the secret lies in weaving some simple habits into your daily and weekly routines. These little changes won’t just keep your house in order; they’ll also make your life a bit easier and could even lift your mood and productivity.

Healthy habits for a clean home

1. Establish a daily routine

Begin each day by making your bed, a simple task that can greatly enhance your overall productivity. Aim to put dishes, clothes, toys, and other items in their rightful places either before bedtime or first thing in the morning to avoid clutter buildup. Additionally, take a moment to quickly clean high-traffic areas like the kitchen and bathroom, as well as flat surfaces such as shelves.

2. Set weekly cleaning tasks

While daily habits lay the groundwork for a tidy home, weekly routines ensure a more thorough clean. This includes vacuuming and mopping floors, changing bed linens, cleaning the bathroom, dusting surfaces, and more. Doing so weekly prevents dust and grime accumulation, reducing germs and pests like dust mites.

3. Declutter regularly

Clutter can rapidly transform a tidy space into chaos. Allocate a specific spot for every item in your house, from toys to clothes to books. Remember that paper, including mail, bills, and menus, is a major clutter culprit, so find a system to organize these items. If you have things you no longer need, consider donating them to someone who might.

4. Create a cleaning schedule

Cleaning shouldn’t be left to chance. Establish a schedule, breaking down tasks and assigning them to different days or times. This approach makes the work more manageable over time.

5. Involve everyone

This can be challenging, especially with children, who are often major contributors to messes. Assign age-appropriate tasks to family members or roommates. For kids, these could include picking up toys, placing dishes in the sink, or organizing shoes.

6. Address messes immediately

Address spills and messes right away to prevent hard-to-clean grime. This includes regularly cleaning your fridge and tidying up after cooking. For example, if you try on several outfits, put the ones you don’t choose back in their place immediately.

7. Establish ‘drop zones’

Designate specific areas for commonly used items like keys, clothes, shoes, and bags. This strategy helps prevent clutter and makes it easier to find things when needed.

8. Minimize dirt and debris

Implement preventative measures to keep your home cleaner for longer. Place doormats at entrances and adopt a no-shoe policy indoors to reduce the amount of dirt tracked inside.

9. Maintain a daily laundry routine

Avoid the overwhelming “laundry day” by washing clothes regularly, ideally daily. Promptly fold and store laundry to prevent piles from accumulating on furniture.

10. Conduct regular deep cleaning

Besides daily and weekly tidying up, periodic deep cleaning is essential. Focus on often-neglected areas, like behind furniture and appliances, during these sessions.

Maintaining a clean house is a realistic goal. Through a series of simple, consistent habits, you can keep your home orderly and welcoming. Start with small steps, maintain consistency, and watch as these habits seamlessly integrate into your lifestyle.
