Human physical abilities are inherently different from those of animals. In close-range attacks, humans lack the natural armor, sharp claws, and sheer jaw pressure that apex predators possess, often leading to serious or fatal injuries. Yet throughout history, there are astonishing cases in which ordinary people, pushed to the absolute brink by survival instincts, have successfully fought back against animals. These stories of grit and quick thinking prove that while humans may be physically outmatched, our capacity for unexpected defiance can turn the tables in the most desperate situations.
Returning the attack: an Australian man versus a crocodile
In the remote landscapes of Australia’s Northern Territory, the saltwater crocodile reigns as an apex predator, capable of snapping bones with immense bite force. Yet a farmer named Colin Deveraux, already in his sixties, managed to survive an encounter with one through a bizarre and desperate counterattack.
Colin had stopped by a small, receding lake on his property to look at a school of fish trapped in the shallows. He had no idea that a 3.2-meter-long saltwater crocodile was lurking just beneath the muddy surface. Without warning, the reptile launched itself from the water and clamped its massive jaws onto Colin’s right leg.
The crocodile began shaking him violently, treating the grown man like a rag doll, and attempted to drag him into the deeper water to initiate a fatal drowning sequence. Facing an immediate, life-threatening situation, Colin’s adrenaline surged. He instinctively kicked at the crocodile’s armored ribs with his free left leg, but the beast refused to let go.
Realizing he was seconds away from being pulled under, Colin made an unprecedented move: he decided to bite the crocodile back. In the chaotic mud and water, his face ended up right next to the reptile’s head. He opened his mouth and sank his teeth deeply into the crocodile’s tough, leathery eyelid. He flipped his head back in a fierce tugging motion. Startled by the sudden pain to its sensitive eye area, the crocodile finally opened its jaws.
Colin scrambled away as fast as his bleeding leg could carry him. The crocodile pursued him on land for about four meters before giving up and retreating into the lake. Colin was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent extensive debridement to clean the bacteria-ridden wound, followed by skin graft surgery. He fully recovered after nearly a month in the hospital. The local wildlife authorities later captured and euthanized the crocodile to prevent it from attacking anyone else.

Turning defense into offense: a slap to a black bear
Wild bears are notoriously dangerous animals when startled or protecting their territory. At Colorado’s St. Regis Aspen Resort, a black bear once made headlines when it wandered into a kitchen and attacked a security guard, knocking him down with a powerful swipe that caused serious injuries before the animal was eventually euthanized. But in another Colorado incident, a human managed to reverse the dynamic entirely through sheer bravado.
An American man named Anthony Moren was enjoying an evening walk with his family and their pet dog when the environment suddenly shifted from peaceful to perilous. Sensing danger, the dog began barking frantically at a nearby thicket, alerting the family to a wild black bear hiding in the shadows.
Panic ensued as the family members tried to retreat to safety. Knowing that running can trigger a predator’s instinct to chase, Anthony bravely stepped forward to confront the bear himself. As the bear poked its large head out of the brush to investigate, Anthony stood his ground, looked the predator in the eyes, and shouted a commanding “Go back!”
To emphasize his point, Anthony reached out and delivered a sharp, stinging slap right across the bear’s snout. Before the startled animal could react, Anthony quickly turned to nearby objects, banging items together to create a deafening barrage of noise. Overwhelmed by the aggressive human defense, the black bear turned around and bolted into the woods. Thanks to Anthony’s rapid escalation from defense to offense, no one was injured, and the encounter ended with the humans completely turning the tables.

Unexpected counterattack: a boxing coach versus a kangaroo
Kangaroos are often viewed as gentle marsupials, but large males possess powerful hind legs, sharp claws, and a deceptively strong upper body capable of grappling. In Ballina, New South Wales, a 59-year-old retired boxing coach named Des found himself forced into the toughest match of his life against one.
The incident began when Des heard his dog barking unusually and frantically in his backyard. Investigating the commotion, he discovered a massive kangaroo attempting to drag his dog away. Des shouted loudly to startle the marsupial, which successfully got it to drop the dog — but the kangaroo then turned its full aggression on Des.
Des tried to flee, but the athletic animal chased him out of his yard and into the street, quickly overtaking him. The kangaroo knocked Des down and then stomped and scratched him relentlessly. Des managed to get back up and grabbed a heavy tree branch to defend himself, but his swing failed to stop the assault; the kangaroo simply snapped the branch from his hand.
Left with no other options, Des relied on his decades of boxing training. He squared up, found his footing, and began throwing powerful hooks and jabs directly at the kangaroo’s face. Despite suffering deep gashes and injuries across his chest and arms, Des refused to back down. Seizing a momentary opening as the kangaroo turned its head, Des employed advanced grappling techniques to tackle the animal and pin it to the pavement, finally ending the intense confrontation.
