In the annals of history, countless examples of individuals have risen from humble beginnings to achieve great things. One such person is Wang Gongchen, a scholar from the Song Dynasty whose story of honesty and integrity continues to inspire even today.
Wang Gongchen’s early life
Born into a poor family, Wang Gongchen lost his father at a young age, leaving his mother and four siblings dependent on him. As the eldest child, he shouldered the responsibility of providing for his family. Despite his hardships, Wang was known for his filial piety, frugal lifestyle, and honesty, earning his villagers’ respect and admiration. He was also a voracious reader and a diligent student, often waking up before dawn or in the middle of the night to study.
Journey to becoming a scholar
Through years of hard work and dedication, by the age of 20, Wang had mastered the art of writing. He participated in the local and provincial examinations, excelling in both. In A.D. 1030, he traveled to the capital to participate in the imperial examination, presided over by Emperor Song Renzong himself. Wang’s innovative arguments, unique insights, and fluent writing impressed him, so the emperor declared him the top scholar.
A display of unparalleled honesty
During the announcement of the top three scholars at the royal court, while the other two immediately expressed their gratitude, Wang Gongchen stunned everyone by declining the honor. He stated: “Your Majesty, I am unworthy of being the top scholar. Please award it to someone else.”
This created a stir in the court, as no one in the history of the imperial examination had ever declined such a prestigious honor. When asked why, Wang revealed that he had previously worked on the examination topic and felt his selection was due to luck rather than merit. He believed accepting the honor without disclosing this would be dishonest, something he had never been in his life.
The emperor’s verdict
Emperor Song Renzong, moved by Wang’s honesty, appreciated his integrity and predicted that he would be a great asset to the nation. He stated: “Having previously worked on the examination topic shows your diligence. Moreover, your essay reflects your genuine thoughts, making you deserving of the title. Your honesty, a quality befitting a top scholar, is more valuable than your talent. Hence, I insist on you accepting this honor.”
Wang Gongchen: The honest scholar
Thus, Wang Gongchen became known as an honest scholar in history. He served the court for 55 years, earning the respect of the public and officials with his honesty, integrity, and remarkable talent. His son-in-law, Li Gefei, was a famous scholar of the Song Dynasty, and his granddaughter, Li Qingzhao, became one of the most renowned female poets in Chinese literature.
Conclusion
