Chrysanthemums, also known as mums or chrysanths, can be made into a tea that can be beneficial for your eyes. Chrysanthemum tea is especially good for those who use a computer for a prolonged period of time.
However, there are some considerations to keep in mind when making chrysanthemum tea.
Best way to drink chrysanthemum tea
Always start with boiling water. Add to it five to seven flowers, but do not add anything else, including sugar or cream. The cup can be refilled five to seven times without diluting the benefits of the chrysanthemums. However, do not drink it consecutively for more than five days.
Add berries or flowers
The addition of berries or other flowers with chrysanthemums can be effective in treating specific ailments. The inclusion of lycium berries (goji) can benefit one’s vision, while the addition of hawthorn berries (shan zha) can help to reduce weight and lower blood pressure. Brewing chrysanthemum with honeysuckle flowers (jinyinhua) helps to prevent colds and sore throats.
Different types
Two types of chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum morifolium (juhua) and the “wild” chrysanthemum Chrysanthemum indicum (yejuhua), are commonly used to make tea. The former helps to treat eye irritations and liver ailments while the latter helps to relieve boils and oral ulcers.
Best type to use
When selecting chrysanthemums, avoid large, white blooms. Rather, select blooms that are small and light yellow in color with a delicate scent.
